Due to the Atomic Energy Act and their own sense of responsibility, utilities operating nuclear power plants are obligated to ensure effective, appropriate and practical initial and refresher training for all operators. They share the conviction that the nuclear power plant simulators necessary for this should be run centrally and jointly. This thus ensures that the sum of all skill and experience is available for all nuclear power plants and that the simulator courses are run to common-determined, high standards. The significant synergies the centre brings allow very economical operation.
Furthermore, all experience gleaned from training as well as the construction and operation of simulators can be centrally collected and used. For this purpose, the consortium partners founded the Simulator Centre in Essen-Kupferdreh, which is run by the companies KSG and GfS.

Experiencing Full-depth 3D Visualization without VR Headsets

Interacting with computer-generated 3D content in a virtual environment has come a long way in in the past few decades. The global VR market is expected to grow to US$48.5 billion by 2025 according to a 2017 report by Grand View Research. We see the emergence of VR for many applications in the nuclear industry as well. To be in a virtual world generally requires the use of head-mounted displays (HMDs), which comes with several well-understood limitations --- until now, that is… L3Harris will present Orchid® IX for experiencing high-value assets in full-depth 3D without HMDs.

Simulator Upgrades resulting from Modernizing Plant Digital Control Systems

It is well known in our industry that upgrading of control systems from analog systems to digital systems leads to equivalent simulator upgrades. The reason why these upgrades are required on the operator training simulators first is clear: operators must be adept at operating the simulated plant with these digital systems before operating the actual nuclear power plant. In this presentation, L3Harris will review various simulator implementation strategies and highlight a few recent simulator upgrade projects resulting from modernized plant control systems.

Successfully Upgrading the Oconee Simulators

L3Harris was contracted to upgrade PWR full scope simulators for the Oconee Nuclear Station in South Carolina, United States. The scope of the simulators upgrade included the provision of new platforms, upgrading select plant models, introduction of new instructor control graphic pages, a new A/V system and the partial upgrade of the simulators’ I/O system. We will review the project, challenges and successes in this presentation.
17.00-17.30 Panel Discussion

Managing Simulator Upgrade Projects

What are the most beneficial simulator upgrades (e.g. rehost, reactor core model upgrade, NSSS model upgrade, BOP model upgrade, I/O system replacement, severe accident simulation, etc.)? What is the best strategy (phases and sequencing) for these upgrades? How do you keep configuration management and control during large simulator projects while changes are made at the site and at the simulation vendor facility? When is the best time to introduce simulator changes (developed at the site) during large simulator upgrade projects?
