Simulation Assisted Engineering Applied to Building New Power Plants – WSC

Simulation Assisted Engineering (SAE) can provide several benefits during the design, construction and commissioning phases of building a new power plant and when combined with a full-featured configuration management system, the plant design bases data used on the simulator can effectively be controlled and managed. The plant design basis data is used to develop engineering-grade models of the plant systems and processes to create the high fidelity SAE simulator, which is verified against the reference power plant design and any available operational data.

The SAE simulator provides an engineering tool that allows for optimization of plant equipment design and selection, verification and validation of DCS control logic and HMI displays, and validation of commissioning procedures, and even resource and schedule planning of commissioning tasks. An important aspect of building a new power plant and an SAE simulator to support the many design, development, and testing activities is to have a configuration management system capable of storing all pertinent design basis data and revisions to such data, providing data traceability and creation of reports such as simulator design specifications based on the reference plant data.

Abu Dhabi Polytechnic offers a post-secondary career-based technical education that provides both academic education and industrial training to help supply the technical workforce for the UAE industrial manpower to fulfill the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. The nuclear technology program is AD Poly’s flagship program that saw its inaugural class graduate last July. This unique program is based on the Systematic Approach to Training that starts with identifying the tasks required for a position in a nuclear power plant and then develops the curriculum based on the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to perform the tasks. In this presentation, the landscape for the advent of nuclear power in the UAE and the Higher Diploma in Nuclear Technology curriculum will be defined. As the HDNT program matures and new infrastructure is built, there will be opportunities for simulation.
