Novel Uses of 3D Immersive Visualization Platforms for Safety Training in the Oil and Gas Industry – Nils Andersson – Chief Technical Officer – EON Reality

As part of an effort to enhance process safety, EMRQ and EON Reality has implemented a research program to develop an advanced, immersive, 3D training platform. Initial work involved the development of generic 3D models for typical oil and gas facilities equipment such as compressor skids, and a patented linkage protocol for connecting the 3D training environment to control room panel training simulators in real time. This unique aspect will enable multiple 3D platforms and control panel simulators to be connected, allowing teams to train simultaneously on the same scenario. In this case, field operators and control room operators can interact in real time simulations similar to how they would interact in a field environment. Current work is focusing on enhancing the robustness of the system by building a large, complex 3D model of a full gas processing facility, the development of critical work process training scenarios, and executing the work needed to allow for the connection of multiple platforms. Also, work continues to enhance the realism of the training environment through visual enhancements and the incorporation of other sensory stimuli to the training experience. The element of realism being developed in this program will allow for more effective training and enable workers to perform their jobs more safely.

The presentation will go through objectives, background, compressor simulator, marine simulator, gas processing facility simulator, augmented reality, 4D enhancements and conclusions.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is one of the most prolific technologies in the era of high-performance computing. It is a worldly integration of applied physics, chemistry, engineering, and computer science. It is an enabling technology that is crucial in responding to sudden, large-scale challenges that many industries periodically face, including the petrochemical industry.

In this regard, Computational fluid Dynamics is having a huge impact on the oil and gas industry that embraced it few decades ago in order to shorten product-process development cycles, save in capital investments, reduce waste, and improve product quality, energy efficiency, and process safety.

Availability of easy-to-use CFD tools has been increased enormously over the years. Development of parallel machines and parallel algorithms designed for these machines has allowed the simulations of industrial situations that were once impossible to numerically investigate. Advances have also been achieved in handling the immense amount of data generated by complex and large-scale CFD simulations.

Enhancing CFD models’ reliability and reducing their computational overheads will lead certainly to an efficient integration of CFD to large-scale process simulators which is an ultimate goal of the petrochemical industry to treat all its operational issues with the necessary efficiency required by nowadays tough market competitions, varying societal demands, and strict environmental regulations.The next generation computational tools are a balanced combination of CFD and process simulators that certainly will provide opportunities to serve the petrochemical industry with higher quality and higher performance processes and products.
