20th & 21st June 2013 Beijing – China
On the 20th and 21st of June 2013 NRG Events hosted the very first Nuclear Training & Simulation China Forum. The event took place in the amazing 5-star Peninsula Hotel in Beijing
After meeting with and talking to some of the key people and organizations in the Chinese Nuclear Industry, we found out that there was a great need in China for information and networking within the areas of training and simulation. So we decided to organize and host the first Nuclear Training & Simulation China Forum. The focus points of the event were Training & Simulation, Safety Analysis and Regulation. These are some of the most important areas in the Chinese nuclear industry at the moment, since China is one of the few countries in the world firmly committed to rapidly expanding the use of nuclear power.
From the beginning we attracted interest from the world’s leading vendors and service and solution providers to participate as sponsors. GSE Systems was our Lead Sponsor and Dr. Oliver Tsaoi, GSE Director China did an excellent job as the Chairperson of the event. Other sponsors were L-3 MAPPS, Vortex/CM Labs Simulation with GET Technologies, ISS with DMS, CNPO, CNPSC and 3V Services.
Almost 100 experts in the Chinese Nuclear Energy Industry (vendors, utilities, regulators and research institutes) in total enjoyed a variety of presentations about for example China’s Nuclear Power Status and Law Framework, Simulation for Nuclear New Build, Preventing/Managing Future Accidents Like Fukushima Daiichi, How to effectively train simulation instructors to produce skilled operators, Nuclear Safety Analysis Computer Codes for Simulation and Licensing, Bringing safety analysis into real-time, making high-fidelity engineering code interactive. We also heard case studies from Daya Bay NPP and Tianwan NPP.
The latest technologies, projects, codes, 3D visualization and simulation, strategies and focus points for the present and future were presented and demonstrated by an excellent speaker line-up.
There were presentations from key vendors in the industry (GSE Systems, L-3 MAPPS, CNPO, CNPSC, ISS, DMS, 3V Services, CM Labs), Power Plants (Daya Bay NPP, Tianwan NPP), research institutes (SNPTC, Tsinghua University), the CNEA and more.
On day 2 we also had a very impressive and interactive panel discussion about Severe Accident Simulation for Full Scope Simulators, one of the key present and future focus areas for the industry. The panel was chaired by Dr. Chris Allison from ISS and panelists were Professor Yanghua Yang (SNPTC/Shanghai Jiaotong University), Mr. George Utmel (WSC), Mr. George McCullough (GSE Systems) and Mr. Qi Kelin (CNPO). The informative discussions were dealing with: Is it the right time to include severe accident simulators as a mandatory tool for operators training? The need of new tests. The results of severe accident simulation still show non-negligible dispersion when they are compared with experimental data of available tests. Further development nuclear safety related software would result in a clear future progress of code predictions or new experiments based on Fukushima experience would be needed for any improvement.
During the coffee and networking breaks, attendees were networking with our sponsors and exhibitors and amongst themselves in the exhibitor area. Those were great opportunities to get demonstrations of latest technologies, talk business and enjoy a drink, a snack and some fresh fruit. Also, the attendees were able to enjoy an excellent 5-star networking lunch on both days and also on this we received great feedback.
With the Forum being the first in its kind in China, we received very good and useful feedback and based on that it seems there was a real need for a platform like this in China and has given us something to build on. We have created the basis for a regularly returning Chinese event.
With the help and commitment from our sponsors and speakers and the feedback, interest and need for information shown by the attendees we will be working towards our 2nd annual Forum next year in China and hope to create an even better event.
I would like to thank all our sponsors: GSE Systems, L-3 MAPPS, ISS, CNPSC, CNPO, DMS, Vortex/CM Labs & GET, 3V Services for their support and belief to make this event a success. Also a special thanks to our speakers and delegates who made the effort to be part of this Forum and helped us to create the basis for the next successful Nuclear Training & Simulation China Forums to come.
